ladycrush: suzanne of scarlett hill

As you may or may not know, I can get reeeally snap-happy. When I have a willing and lovely subject to shoot, I can really go to town with the portraits. Case in point, today’s ladycrush: Suzanne, my talented and infectiously-positive colleague. Her awesomeness translated so well into the camera, that I just couldn’t stop. She’s one of those girls who you just know is cool, from the moment you meet her. I took advantage and asked her for three different looks that exemplify her sense of style.

Who and what inspires your style?

I’m inspired mostly by my music; dressing in an inspiring way can help my creativity when writing songs and helps me feel confident when performing. I usually ask myself – would I wear this onstage? If the answer is no, I pass. I aspire for continuity between my personality, style, and music.

What is your favorite fashion trend for the summer and why?

I honestly don’t keep up with trends anymore. I know it seems counter-intuitive for a stylist to not be into trends, but what I’ve found is once you’ve settled into a style that feels you, you stick with it. Great style to me is more about being genuine than the most current.

What do you love most about Atlanta? Where are some of your favorite Atlanta spots?

I’m an outdoorsy person, so I love that Atlanta has so many trees and places to enjoy nature! I love running along the    Chattahoochee and hiking at Arabia Mountain. I also love Decatur for grabbing coffee or dinner and drinks, and Scott’s Antique Market for fun finds.

Best style advice you’ve ever heard/given?

kimono cover-ups

Look, I’m gonna be honest here. I don’t feel comfortable with a lot of the terms used in the fashion world to describe ethnic-inspired clothing – kimonos, aztec, tribal, et cetera. It’s typically not accurate and while imitation can be a form of flattery, it can also really minimize cultural and ceremonial significance. That being said, I also know it’s damn near impossible to avoid such vocabulary when it’s so pervasive in clothing descriptions, media, and the like. So unfortunately here I am, reduced to using “kimono cover-ups” for convenience instead of easy-breezy-lightweight-open-robes. Please forgive me the terminology and focus on how awesome it is that these are back in style!

Comfort chic / understated snatched.

Who and what inspires your style?

Hmmm…that’s kind of tough. There are people who I admire with style I do not necessarily want to emulate. I’m confident enough in my own style to appreciate when I see a trendsetter.

let the light in

Spring is so here. It’s so here. Regardless of how many more freak cold fronts we might face, I’m determined to be in spring mode. It makes everything better! And with every beautiful day, I’m starting to pull out things in my wardrobe I forgot I ever had. This easy outfit features items that have been hibernating in my closet for quite some time now so I don’t think any of it is available in the stores anymore..

pin addiction: illustration

I bow down to the creators of Pinterest. Never have I ever had such organized imagery inspiration to keep track of all the things that make me look or think twice. As you can imagine, the boards closest to my heart are those related to my craft – art, installation, and illustration. Here is some of my favorite illustrative work found via Pinterest:

spring fling inspired by modcloth

With spring almost in full swing, I’m dying for more patterns in my wardrobe. But since I do own so many solid colors, I’ve been trying to brainstorm new ways to mix, match, and liven up my closet. Using this ModCloth Lead By Example dress as my basic staple, I decided to layer all the trends I’m loving lately to create this fun work-to-play uniform.

ModCloth Spring Style

The formula is pretty self-explanatory and would easily work with a number of colors, patterns, and textures. Dress, jacket, scarf, oxfords and then cool accessories. If that’s not easy breezy, I don’t know what is!

rachel rector lingerie

I usually don’t pay much attention to my undergarments; I typically go for comfort and if anything else, something cute. It doesn’t usually occur to me that my style can extend to lingerie. I’d love to be shown the way, and I think Rachel Rector’s  modern designs could do just that.

This Brooklyn-based designer crafts lovely pieces using bright and sweet colors with bold lines and classic silhouettes. Her lovingly made creations are intended to provide support in more ways than one. Boosting your booty and your confidence? I say yes.

But in order to get these beauties out to the world, Rachel is seeking some Kickstartin’ help! Please share her campaign if you can and spread the word out. RR lingerie is a wonderful alternative to the mass-produced cookie cutter bras and such you find in the mall; wouldn’t you like to wear something underneath that’s as beautiful and unique as you are? One glance at these lookbooks and I know you’ll want to wear undergarments on the outside as much as I do.

spring shoe lust

I’m sure that you, just like me, are dying for winter to go away for good. Until it does, I’m going to keep dreaming of wearing these easy breezy styles up and down the festival circuit. Everyone needs at least one or two pairs from each of these trends: fun statement flats, simple sandals, and chunky fisherman-inspired heels. I gotta say, I like where fashion is going right now; modern simplicity with bold accents and a delicate balance of masculine and feminine silhouettes.

waiting to bloom

Like most of the country, we folks here in Georgia are totally done with winter. Every now and then we’ve been blessed with a warmer day (warmer meaning actually hitting 50 degrees) and you bet your butt we take advantage of it. The outfit seen here was worn on such a day and it felt unbelievably good to only have two light layers on!

There’s something I haven’t been telling you, but you may have guessed it by now.

flared layers

I’ll admit it.. I’m a little bit obsessed with flared jeans. I wish they were more popular than the contemporary skinny standard, but every now and then I just don’t even care. I love them! My favorite pair is surprisingly from Target. Yeah, I said Target. They have the perfect amount of stretch and don’t look too retro. They go great with anything and today I pair them with one of my new favorite tops from Anthro. Flared top with flared jeans? I say yes.
